Plan While You are Able

Did you know that if you are over 18, no one has any legal authority to make medical decisions in your behalf--not even a spouse, unless you have executed "advance directives" in place?  While that is very liberating, perhaps, what if you are in an accident and left unable to convey your wishes?
Advance directives are various documents that you execute while you are capable of doing so (i.e. legally competent) and serve you in the event in the future, you are unable to make  decisions or communicate your wishes for your medical care. If no one can legally make those decisions for you without YOU having put advance directives in place, are you protected against the "what ifs" of life?
