Patch's Poll: Would You Ride A High Speed Rail If It Ran Through Connecticut?

Amtrak has a $115 billion proposal to create a 220 mph, Boston-to-Washington D.C. rail line that would include three stops in this state: Hartford, Danbury and Waterbury.

Rail travel is not exactly a new concept for Connecticut residents. There are many areas in this state, mostly surrounding the highway corridors and in the cities, where you can find serviceable train lines leading to Stamford, New York, Boston, New London or Springfield.

But Amtrak, the national rail service, has a new proposal that it plans to put into place by 2030: a 220 mph high-speed rail from Washington D.C. to Boston.

According to The Hartford Courant, Amtrak proposed the idea two years ago, and this month staffers from the Federal Railway Administration are touring the Northeast show off updated plans on the idea.

The project would cost $115 billion, and would “dramatically reduce travel times between Boston, New York City, Philadelphia and Washington D.C.,” the Courant reported. As an example, a trip from Boston to New York would be significantly reduced from 214 minutes to just 94 minutes, when travelling at that 220 mph speed.

But the stops would be limited, as the point of the railway is only to hit most major cities along the Northeast. In Connecticut, the train would only make three stops: Danbury, Waterbury and Hartford.

What do you think about this proposal? Would you ride a high-speed train that took you to Boston or New York within a short period of time? Take our poll and share your thoughts in the comments.

What a farce. Amtrak could not build a successful paper clip for 115 billion dollars and has proved that in the last half century living off government subsidies. The 115 billion would be for union retirements exclusively ( and they would ask for more in 3 years for cost of living adjustments and disability pay for all Amtrak employees and their dogs) with less than ten dollars put into defective engineering such as the ugly galvanized electric poles stung at 100 foot intervals along the most scenic stretch of America for the current Amtrak failure. Wake up America. Amtrak is a government contrivance, and as such, it is currently and will always be a failure. Every man, woman and child in America has suibsidized Amtrak every year to guarantee union rail employees can retire better than a Harvard graduate in physics. If Boeing built the rail line "for profit" it would be a success, while if the government huilt it it would be a toilet without the plumbing.

There is a report in the Wall Street Journal that Amtak has asked the Obama administration for the Pelosi one trillion dollar stimulus money (which produced absolutely no jobs) for Amtrak to build a passenger rocket to Pluto using current Amtrak train technology. They are now working on hiw to attach the galvanized poles to the sky for the rocket train to ride on. Amtrak said their plan will replace the manned space program which Obama cancelled to fund the 5 billion dollar window caulking program last year, and Solydra. Obama and Pelosi have immediately approved the request and Democrats overwhelming support it with the caveat it has to use only union ermployees so it can quadruple the jobs. The first ride to Pluto will stop in CT to pick up eager passengers who have made the trip several times before.

What a foolish thing to suggest going to Pluto. Chicago or Flint, Michigan maybe. I think the government could waste just as much money going to places right here in the USA that nobody wants to go to just as well as Pluto. Let's have a contest! What city should Amtrak have as a destination that nobody wants to go to? Second prize winner will get the first one way ticket issued. First prize winner gets to stay home.

At what point will the American people wake up and realize that the government is the exact opposite of the Midas Touch? It has the Sidam Touch (Google it). We are headed to bankruptcy as a nation and these clowns want to subsidize a high speed train? I would say more but Ron basically covered it. Spot on. When will we wake up from this stupor? My children will be the first generation which will have their standard of living decline....so sad. Our founding fathers realized the dangers of a large, centralized government and tried to prevent it, but about 100 years ago the progressives started taking over and it has been down hill since then. Little by little the insanity has crept in...and we have no one but ourselves to blame. Let's build a high speed train to Europe that goes one way. We can put all of the politicians on it and then start from scratch. I honestly believe we could randomly pick 535 Americans via a lottery and they could do better then the clowns we have in office now. I am so frustrated my head is hurting....

Don't we already have one for the local elites to ride and isn't it called Acela Express. when the fares are below the cost of driving people will use it. Unfortunately the tight suits will raise the price of vehicle ownership through highers tax and gas prices not by cutting waste and fraud to bring down ticket prices. SO I SAY NO!
