Patch's Poll: Should An Employer Have Access To Your Facebook?

Employers are increasingly seeking access to employees' social media pages - what do you think about this? Take our poll and add your thoughts in the comments.

The national debate over whether employers have the right to demand access to their workers' social media pages heated up again this week when news surfaced that "a teacher’s aide is fighting her suspension from a Michigan school district job because she refused to give the superintendent her Facebook password," according to the San Francisco Chronicle website.

Last month, Facebook warned it could seek legal action against employers who ask job applicants to reveal their Facebook password because that violated the social network’s terms of service.

The American Civil Liberties Union says this kind of request is illegal. Connecticut Sen. Richard Blumenthal says he will fight this practice by introducing a bill.

Employers should have access to anything you make public in Facebook, but not to your ID and password. That is no different than having access to your credit report vs access to your on line bank account.

So does that also mean employers can put cameras in bathrooms at work because you are using their facilities on company time? How about taping your calls ( personal) when you use their phone. How about bugging the water cooler?
