Trunk or Treat Becomes An Annual Halloween Event In Waterford

What started out of necessity last year is becoming an annual Halloween event. Trunk or Treat will happen at the Cohanzie Fire Department's parking lot on October 26 and there's still time to join the fun.

Last year, when Halloween was officially canceled in Waterford because wires were down and streets were dark following storm-related power outages, Shannon Mayer decided to take matters into her own hands.

As a mother of four, she understood how much the spooky, candy-laden holiday meant to kids and organized a Trunk or Treat at Cohanzie Fire House parking lot on November 5, 2012. Despite the short notice, about 50 vehicles decorated for Halloween turned out and hundreds of kids scored candy.

"Everyone had such a good time they said you have to do it again," says Mayer.

And so she is. This year's Trunk or Treat will be held on Saturday, October 26, in the Cohanzie Fire House/Dedrick Field parking lot. The event runs from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., although participants should arrive between 5 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. to set up trunks.

If you're interested in participating, Mayer has extended the deadline to register for the event until this Friday. (If it rains, the event will be held at the same time, same place, on Sunday, October 27.)

And, in the same spirit of giving that fueled last year's Trunk or Treat, (which collected donations for the local food bank), this year people are encouraged to bring donations for the Waterford-East Lyme Animal Shelter. The shelter doesn't need food or treats, Mayer says, "It’s mostly cleaning supplies and zip lock bags, and Petco or Walmart gift cards."

This year as last year, a DJ will be on hand to provide entertainment and games, and there will be prizes for the best decorated trunks. For kids, there will be ample treats and Cohanzie Fire House has chipped in to provide hot cocoa too. Admission to the event is free.
