Who Will Run The Town In Seven Months?

Five Things To Know For Tuesday, April 26, 2011

1.    A cloudy, foggy day today, with a high of 65, according to the National Weather Service. The clouds should continue through tonight, as well as the temperature, with the low only at 58, according to the service.

2.    Over the past two years, the Waterford Planning and Zoning Commission has worked on redoing its plan of development. This is a once-a-decade process, and this plan should be done within a few months.

But despite all the work, not much is going to change as far as the zoning goes, First Selectman Dan Steward said. The three main roads, Cross Road, Boston Post Road and Route 85, will still be zoned for businesses, with all the side roads kept as residential, Steward said. There could be more growth on those three roads, although Waterford is hitting its maximum density, he said.

3.   The Democratic Town Committee meets tonight at 7:30 p.m., as election season is just about to begin. It will be interesting to see if any changes will happen in  November. There has been some grumbling about the board of education, and Chairman Donald Blevins, a Democrat, is up for re-election. Also, it will be interesting to see if the Democrats can get anybody to run against Steward, a Republican. The first selectman position will now be a , instead of two. Steward has been first selectman since 2005. Patch will follow this story throughout the summer, seeing who will throw their hat into the ring.   

4.    The Youth Services Bureau is running a five-week SAT preparation class starting May 4. The course runs until June 1, just in time for the next test on June 4. The class meets every Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and costs $200 a person, which includes books. All interested students must pre-register by calling 860-444-5848.
