Whiz Kid: Ally Wang

Ally Wang Awarded Rotary Scholar of the Year

The held a lunch on Monday to celebrate the academics and community service of four deserving students. Ally Wang is among four juniors at Waterford High School to receive the Rotary Scholar Award.

Wang has excelled in academics during her time thus far at . She is a CAPT Scholar, and has maintained a place on the high honor roll for eleven consecutive quarters.

Aside from the grades, Wang has also been recognized for her work in both English and science. In 2009 she received the Toshiba Exploravision Honorable Mention for her role in creating a contact lens to aid the blind.  Last year Wang was presented with the English Excellence Award.

 “As Rotarians we meet for lunch every week and get together to help our community both here in Waterford and in other countries as well,” explained Rotary member Anne Ogden.

Wang has followed suit with the Rotary’s motto of “Service Above Self.” To date she has served over 170 hours of community service. These hours are fulfilled by acting as an assistant math and art teacher at Southeast Connecticut Chinese School or assisting at Gretchen’s House Daycare. Wang also enjoys serving her community creatively by playing violin at local nursing homes or aiding the Mystic Seaport with costume design.

When Patch asked how she manages to stay so active, Wang optimistically replied, “Sometimes I get a little stressed, but I always manage to pull through; it’s worth it.”

In her spare time Wang enjoys playing volleyball or participating in the school’s drama club. Her passion is the theater; she has been in nine shows to date. 

“I really love theater," said Wang. You really get to know the cast and they become your family."

While most students spend their summers on the beach, Wang will continue her education by working in a neurology lab at Yale. 

Wang plans to extend her post-secondary career by attending a college which offers an 8 year combined Bachelor of Science and MD program.

“I like the Boston area,” she said.
