Waterford’s Changing Position On Nuclear Power

Five Things To Know For Thursday, April 14, 2011

1.    The rain should stop today and the temperature should reach 59, according to the National Weather Service. Expect a gentle wind with growing clouds tonight, according to the service.

2.    On Wednesday, Patch ran into Police Chief Murray Pendleton, who has been in town since Millstone opened in the 1970s. The change over 40 years has been dramatic, he said.

On Monday night, Dominion officials gave a presentation to town hall, and nearly everybody there (with a few notable exceptions) was strongly in favor of nuclear power. Forty years ago it was the exact opposite, Pendleton said. Whenever the executives of Northeast Utilities would go anywhere, the public jeered them, as many were afraid of a nuclear power plant. Several state agencies were even formed to oppose nuclear energy, he said. It was night and day, Pendleton said.

3.    The Youth Services Bureau is currently not seeing any children because of ongoing construction in its parking lot. The Youth Services Bureau shares a parking lot with the police station, and there is a fuel tank for police officers to refill their cars. That fuel tank is being replaced. To keep the children away from any danger, Youth Services Director Dani Gorman has decided to suspend all youth programs until the tanks are replaced.

4.    The Alzheimer’s caregivers' support group meets today at 10 a.m. at the senior center.

5.    On this date in 1912, the Titanic hits an iceberg at 11:40 p.m. It would sink the next day, killing 1,517 people. And on this date in 2003, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez returns to office two days after being thrown out of office by his own military. The Bush Administration denied organizing or encouraging the coup, although many have suggested the contrary.
