Waterford Police Warn of Tree-Cutting Scam

Police say men are trying to steal money by claiming they will do tree cutting and clean debris.

A message from the Waterford Police Department:

We are receiving some reports of out-of-state workers that are offering tree cutting/trimming at very high rates. In one case in Waterford, a person with no equipment arrived to "cut a tree". As it so happened, one of our Officers was there and intervened.

A neighboring community has reported people paying cash as a "deposit" for cleanup/tree work, and the personnel never returning.

While we understand people wanting their storm debris cleaned up and removed, please do what you can to ensure that the company you are dealing with is reputable - license, and insured. You have the right to demand to see their certificates. If you can, do not pay in cash, and always get an estimate and receipt.

Please pass this information on to any elderly persons you know in town that may require tree work. As always, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is...
