"Dancing With The Stars" Champions Are...

Five Things To Know For Saturday, March 26, 2011

1. It should be a sunny, cold day today, with a high of 37 and a low of 17, according to the National Weather Service.

2. Last night’s “Dancing with the Stars” champions were Mark Higgins and Kelly Barnes, both teachers at Clark Lane Middle School. The two just edged teacher Audrey Montanaro and police officer Nick Surdo in a dance-off, after the two couples both received perfect scores. The event was completely packed, the energy was tremendous and all the competitors were absolutely fantastic (yes, even Police Sgt. Andre Parker). Patch did shoot video at the event, but because of a poor attempt at a social life, the product is still not finished. On Monday, the video will be complete, so look for it first thing Monday morning.

3. Here is a complete list of the teachers laid off by the board of education, with their layoffs effective June 30:
Barbara Comstock-King, Clark Lane Middle School Music Teacher
Donna Gilberto, Clark Lane Middle School Art Teacher
Stephanie Glenn, Waterford High School World Language Teacher
Aerilee Harper, Oswegatchie Elementary School First-Grade Teacher
Mary Hendrickson, Oswegatchie Elementary School Art Teacher
Michael Manifold, Waterford High School Business Teacher
Michelle Pyka, Great Neck Elementary School Teacher
Megan Sheehan, Clark Lane Middle School Teacher
Michelle Condon, Great Neck Elementary School Teacher
Catherine McDonald, Oswegatchie Elementary School Third-Grade Teacher

4. Two good fundraisers today. This morning from 8 to 10 at Applebee’s in Groton, the Waterford High School Class of 2012 is sponsoring a pancake breakfast. Tickets are $6 a person. Also, the Easter Bunny is expected to make an appearance. And from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. today in front of Webster Bank on Boston Post Road, the Waterford Girl Scouts will be collecting donations for Operation Cookies for Heroes. The program buys Girl Scout cookies for active military personnel, so stop by and donate to a good cause.

5. Controversial and outspoken Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor turns 81 today. Also, former NBA player and short-shorts enthusiast John Stockton turns 49.
