The Week That Was; The Week That Will Be

A Week Recap; And A Look Into The Future

1.     Last Week’s Recap: Last week might have been a little budget heavy. All right, very budget heavy. A budget story ran five days in a row for the main story, the kind of play normally reserved for war, natural disaster or Tiger Woods crashing his SUV at the end of his driveway. So, rather than link to each budget story, just read this It pretty much sums it all up. Enjoy.

That said, there were some other little bits of news that managed to squeeze onto the site. For example, there was some , and then on . Also, last week had the most since Patch started in November, so maybe the nice weather is bringing out the shoppers. Problems with plastic bags were , the DEP encouraged people not to go out and (I learned that ) and some more, was learned about the Waterford police officer being investigated by state police.

2.     This Week In Weather: Really a nice week until next weekend, when rain is expected. Today and tomorrow, there is a slight chance of rain after 1 p.m., with highs in the mid-60s. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, sunny days are expected with highs in the low-60s. Rain is expected Friday and to continue until Saturday, with again both days having highs in the 60s.

3.     This Week in Schools: It is a full, five-day week this week at all Waterford schools. There are no board of education meetings (the next one is May 26). Also, the Waterford High School is about two months behind because of weather and some issues awarding the bids. Here is the news for each school:

Waterford High School – AP tests continue Monday and Wednesday in English (for 11th-graders), biology and physics. A reminder, because of budget cuts, parents will have to pay for half the cost of AP tests next year. Plus, if anybody is interested in getting some real news for once, try this.

Clark Lane Middle School – First off, the “promotion” ceremony for eighth-graders will be held June 22 at Palmer Auditorium in Connecticut College. Seating is limited to four people per graduate. And elementary students will visit Clark Lane this week to get an idea of what their school next year will look like.

Great Neck Elementary School – On Wednesday, fifth-graders will visit Clark Lane. And on Thursday, Friendship School students in the Great Neck area will visit Great Neck to get an idea of what next year will be like.

Oswegatchie Elementary School – On Thursday, fifth-graders will visit Clark Lane. Also, some quick news, teacher will leave the school next year to work as a principal in Rhode Island.

Quaker Hill Elementary School – This school will be the only one not visiting Clark Lane this week (perhaps next week). Also, the fit girls club meets Tuesday after school, and then is running a 5K Saturday. If anybody wants to know more about the fit girls club, take a look at Patch Wednesday morning.

4.     This week in government. After three months of budget review, municipal government will slow down. Really, the next really big item to come will be who chooses to run in the November elections (caucuses begin this summer). Will anybody challenge First Selectman Dan Steward? Will Board of Education Chairman Donald Blevins keep his position? Who will stay and who will leave the Representative Town Meeting?

This week, there is a planning and zoning meeting Monday. There, the town will begin the groundwork on to developers to turn it into a senior housing complex. However, before any sale can be final, the developer and the town must acquire several grants.

5.     The biggest event this week, in our humble opinion, is Waterford Drama’s premier of "The Pajama Game" that runs Thursday night. Buy your tickets at Waterford High School this week. Waterford’s Spring Fair is Saturday at 10 a.m. at Waterford Beach Park. Admission is $10. There will be a moon bounce, beach-dig and more.

Quote of the Week

“Everybody's talking at me.
I don't hear a word they're saying,
Only the echoes of my mind.”

-Harry Nilsson

Trivia of the Day

Who is the only man to win back-to-back best actor Oscars, and for his role in what films?

Friday’s Answer: Kerry Wood, in just his fifth career start, struck out 20 batters in a one-hit shutout, largely considered to be one of the greatest games ever pitched. Twenty strikeouts tied the record for most in a nine-inning game, with Roger Clemens (twice) and Randy Johnson.
