Last Full Week Before Elections; A Week Of Issues

1. The Week That Was: This was a week where Patch took a "big picture" look  at a few major issues in town.

For example, the most well-read story , and the by state and federal regulators. Currently Dominion is looking into installing massive cooling towers at Millstone, a project that would cost close to $1 billion, after the state mandated they do so, Dominion leaders said.

Speakers also pointed out that some towns have received more through political deals, making Meriden Superintendent Mark Benigni wonder if the formula is the problem, or rather how it is handled by the General Assembly.

2. This Week In Weather: This week should be mostly dry, with highs in the low to mid 50s.

Today is expected to be sunny, with a high of 46. Monday, the high rises to 51, although clouds are expected. Tuesday, rain is expected, with a high around 56. Wednesday and Thursday are both predicted to be partly cloudy, with highs around 58. Friday and Saturday, scattered rains are expected, with highs at 53.

3. This Week In Schools: There are no board meetings this week. The principals will begin working on next year’s budget this week, and the budget books should be printed by December, Belair said.

“I hope we can avoid a budget process like ,” Belair said at the last Board of Education meeting.

On Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. inside Clark Lane Middle School’s auditorium, is a seminar called “” will be the presenter. And the next day, also at Clark Lane Middle School at 5 p.m., there is the Quaker Hill pasta supper and basket bonanza.

On Nov. 2, Great Neck School holds its book fair from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. And Monday at Oswegatchie Elementary School is “Dress Like your Favorite Book Character” day, making us wonder how many students will dress as Francisco d’Anconia.

4. This Week In Events: There continues to be a lot of Halloween events both today and Monday.

Today is there is a , and the plays at 11:45 tonight at Mohegan Sun. Then Monday there is a at the Crystal Mall, and a at Waterford Public Library.

And, throughout the week the “” poster show at the Hygienic Art Park will be on display.

5. This Week In Government: The biggest news in government is really that it is the last full week before elections (obvious to any of those who have seen the intersection of Avery Lane and Boston Post Road). All of our stories will be rerun Sunday morning, two days before the election, and are all available in the .

If any candidate or supporter wants to send a letter to the editor, it has to be submitted by Friday. After Sunday, the only election coverage will be real basics, such as where to vote and the ballot.

The election is Tuesday, Nov. 8.
