The Week That Was, The Week That Will Be

Last Week's Recap; This Week In Weather, School, Government And Zach Hurd

1..    The Week That Was: This week was really a smorgasbord of events, with no dominant story carrying the past seven days. The most well-read story was a follow-up piece on the Robinson case, with parents out of The Friendship School, and administration saying no.

Also, the fire services were again , with the old guard fighting strongly against the new system. A lawsuit about falling off a stationary bike was , and angry parent an unnamed teacher in public and cultures were compared.

In other news, Waterford Patch its new direction, while questioning if anybody was going to oppose First Selectman Dan Steward next year and the dark side of Buffalo Wild Wings was revealed.

Finally, a Waterford Police officer is being . Details are fuzzy (will have more this week), but the allegations are "pretty disgusting," First Selectman Dan Steward said.

2.    This week in weather: It is expected to be sunny today, but Monday the rain should start, at least in the evening. That should continue until Thursday morning. Thursday and Friday will both be cloudy but dry, with highs in the 60s, and then Saturday it is expected to rain again. All information in this report is from the National Weather Service.

3.    This week in schools: There is an early childhood screening for 3- and 4-year-olds at Quaker Hill and Great Neck Elementary School on Thursday (Oswegatchie Elementary School had its screening in April).
At Waterford High School, AP tests begin Wednesday in chemistry, environmental science and psychology.

At Clark Lane Middle School, there is exciting news Tuesday. The school was the only school picked in the state to participate in Michelle Obama’s “Let's Move” initiative. On Tuesday at 1:42 p.m., students across the country (including Clark Lane) will all dance to a song by Beyonce, including at Clark Lane Middle School. Students have been learning to dance to the song for several weeks, so it should be good.

And also, this week is Teacher Appreciation week, so bring an apple to the teacher.

4.    This week in government. The biggest news this week will be the Representative Town Meeting’s three-day budget review, running Monday through Wednesday. The most intriguing budget each night is the police budget on Monday, the fire services on Tuesday (two appeals are pending there) and the board of education, along with final action, on Wednesday. Next week the board of finance will set the mill rate, a tricky job when the state hasn’t yet made up its mind on its budget, and then next year’s tax rate will become final.

Also Monday, a standing committee of the RTM will vote on a ordinance to redo the fire ordinances. Many people directly involved in the fire service will attend the meeting, and some have strong opinions, so it could be contentious.

5.    Waterford's unfortunately was not picked in the NFL Draft.
Hurd, an offensive guard from UConn, will likely try to get signed as a rookie free agent, although he cannot negotiate with any team or work out with any team until the NFL lockout ends.
