The Week That Was, That Week That Will Be

9-11; First Day Of School, A Look Forward

1. The Week That Was: In our humble opinion, the biggest news this week is the news today: the 10-year anniversary of 9/11. Waterford . As Police Chief Murray Pendleton told Patch Thursday, “it's totally not the same world,” and all that is .

The other big news this week happened Tuesday, the first day of school. Patch did both a since last year (quite a bit, thanks to a tight budget), and and from the first day.

Speaking of schools, some specifics were laid out Tuesday for Waterford High School’s , which will be both massive (more than 7,000 square feet) and state-of-the-art (completely wireless, for one). 3. This Week In Schools: As the second week of schools starts, Great Neck Elementary has its back-to-school night Tuesday (other schools have them later).

Also, Saturday is the back-to-school dance for Waterford High School, and Wednesday the school hosts "Lancer Night."

Oswegatchie Elementary School is having its back-to-school barbecue on Friday. And Wednesday, school pictures will be taken at Clark Lane Middle School.

4. This Week In Government: The board of finance meets Wednesday to discuss the budget guidelines for the upcoming year. In other words, it will start discussing how much of an increase over last year's budget should be allowed for departments; or, in simpler terms, how much your taxes will go up in 2012. While it might not set the allowable tax increase Wednesday night, the number is very important. Last year, it was set in November and the budget came in exactly at that percentage.

So, if you think taxes are too high or more services need to be added, go to the meeting and let your voice be heard.

5. This Week In Events: Just two upcoming fundraisers. First off, Oct. 1 is the . It is not too late to set up a team to walk and certainly not too late to donate.

And on Oct. 2, the 34th Annual Jack O'Keefe Memorial Strides Road Race is at Harkness Memorial State Park. Registration is $15 per person and $30 for a family of four. All the proceeds goes to help people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. To sign up, click here.
