Five Things To Know For Friday, April 8, 2011

1.    A cloudy day today, according to the National Weather Service. A high of 49, and a low of 34, according to the service.

2.    Monday, Patch emailed this question to teachers union president Martha Shoemaker:

“Next year, will lose their jobs. If the teachers union would have accepted a as Superintendent Jerome Belair proposed, instead of the contractually obligated average 4.3 percent increase, most if not all of those jobs would have been saved. Looking at all the facts, is the union reconsidering its decision? If not, why? Is 2.15 percent more in salary worth the jobs of 11 colleagues?"

We asked Shoemaker to respond to us by Thursday evening. She never did.

3.    Oswegatchie Elementary School's is tonight at 5:30 at the school. This year, all the students’ acts have to follow a movie theme, and the faculty will be doing acts as well. Tickets are $2 and can be purchased at the door, with all proceeds going to the Channel 3 Kids Camp.

4.    If you are looking for something else to do tonight, three movies open at Regal Cinemas. “Soul Surfer,” starring Sonya Balmores, is running at 4:10, 6:50 and 9:15; “Arthur,” starring Russell Brand, is running at 4, 7 and 9:30; and “Your Highness,” starring Danny McBride and Natalie Portman, runs at 4:20, 7:30 and 9:55.   

5.    A date of illness awareness. On this date in 1993, former tennis star Arthur Ashe announces he has AIDS. Ashe acquired the disease from a blood transfusion. And on this date in 1906, Auguste Deter, the first person to be diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, dies.
