Report: Private Plowers Charging Exorbitant Rates

How much did it cost you to get plowed out after the blizzard?

As the piles of snow got higher from Friday night into Saturday, the cost of having your driveway plowed may have been going up as well.

In New Haven, there was at least one private snowplower who was charging $200 per hour to clear snow away from residences, according to a story in the New Haven Independent.

Connecticut has laws in place that prohibit so-called price gouging in the wake of natural disasters, a law that was enacted in 2012. Under this law, "the Department of Consumer Protection can level an unfair trade practices charge against any business charging an "unconscionably excessive price" for vital goods or services during a weather emergency as declared by the governor," the Connecticut Mirror reported last year.

There have also been many stories since Friday of Good Samaritans and good neighbors helping out where needed.

How much did you pay to get the snow cleared? Tell us in the comments.

These questions always crack me up. So someone drops $25-50k on a truck and a plow, plus fuel and maintenance (the truck and plow get the crap beat out of them when they plow, repairs are inevitable). Then, when mostly UNPREPARED people wake up in the morning, they want some guy to swing by and plow out their driveway for $20. Are they charging a little more? Sure, law of supply and demand has built this country (breaking those laws is destroying it). The REAL question is what are we paying an hour for the local and state plows. If you added up salary, benefits, equipment, fuel, maintenance and material.....well, I bet it's a heck of a lot more then $200 and hour. Of course that is needed or everything would stop. No one is forcing anyone to pay a private plow to do their property. Here is an idea, instead of that next HD TV you plan on getting, buy a snow blower and stop being a victim. Better yet, get out and start shoveling AND help someone who you know is in need (this applies to all you teenagers sitting around with your smart phones text OMG! Look at the snow!!). I can barely move right now I have shoveled so much snow for me and others (elderly) for two days. Of course, there are some exceptions....elderly, disabled etc. but the majority of the complainers are just that....complainers.

I do agree with Waterford Rez, but I tried to use my snowblower and it just bogged down, was only able to get two runs made down my 150 ft driveway hill, not wide enough for my car to pass, so I had to pay someone which was ok with me, I paid $60.00, so very well worth it for the hard work they did, just being able to find someone was the challenge, thankfull for my daughters facebook friends who networked for me, we found someone, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU.

YES---don't know about Exorbitant but-----A private plow driving by---I said a couple sweeps to the left & a couple to the right of a 3-bay driveway for $20----he said ok.....so he does sweeps to left....so he goes to turn around, puts his plow down to plow the street & gets stuck-----I said after you get otta there--you have to do the sweeps to the right---he says that what you get for $20,plus I get stuck & you're not helpin me 1.his sweep to left got majority street & sidewalk 2. i didn't ask the fool to plow the street 3. he's tryin to dig himself out with a plastic shovel 4. he's got no sand 5. at 1st,he didn't even have it in 4-wheel drive till I told him 6. the kicker--he's tryin to plow with touring radials(tread needed) so yes--I'm the fool---guess I better write up a contract next time & hire someone who knows what they're doing---put a plow on some of these guys & they think they own the world
