Police Contract To Be Voted On Tonight

Five Things To Know For Monday, Feb. 7, 2011

  1. There is a chance of snow today, from 9 a.m. to noon, according the National Weather Service. This afternoon, though it should get up to 40 with very little wind, according to the service.
  2. The biggest school news today is that Jerome Belair, formerly Weston’s superintendent, is now superintendent in Waterford. He replaces Randall Collins, who held the position for 20 years. Otherwise a fairly routine day at Waterford schools, with the meal of the day French toast sticks, the classic breakfast-for-lunch.
  3. At the Waterford Community Center today, strength class runs at 8:30 a.m., bridge is at 9 and quilting class starts after lunch, at 1 p.m.
  4. The Representative Town Meeting holds its tonight at 7. The most controversial item on the agenda is a contract for police officers. The proposed contract gives at least a 2.25 percent raise each year to the officers for the next four years. First Selectman Dan Steward has strongly suggested the RTM approve the contract, although several members have voiced their opposition. A full recap will run Tuesday morning.
  5. On this date in 1935, Monopoly was invented. According to the Monopoly website, each game takes one to three hours, which I guess means that in one to three hours, a player will give up, cheat or start throwing hotels, ending the game. A full-length game of Monopoly takes at least six hours, by any reasonable standard. Also, on this date in 1962, the United States implements its boycott on all goods from Cuba, a boycott still in effect today.
