Kobyluck Rejection, Mall Renovation And Large Classes

A Look At The Week That Was

It was a busy week this week, highlighted by two developments that weren’t, another place that closed and one development that was.

The biggest news of the week of a proposal by Kobyluck Brothers LLC to install a Neighbors from the beginning, pointing out the potential impacts it could have and Kobyluck Brother’s problems in other towns. However, it might not be the end, as company owner Matt Kobyluck can still appeal the decision in court.

Along those lines, on Tuesday we the Waterford Station project. Bendersome Development Company got approval in 2008 to build Waterford Station at 845 Hartford Turnpike, a retail center complete with a Circuit City, Red Robin restaurant and Sports Authority.

However, the economy collapsed right after approval was granted and Circuit City went out of business. Bendersome is still looking to develop the property as it searches for anchors. And speaking of going out of business,

On the positive side, the Crystal Mall had its “renovation celebration” this weekend to celebrate the end of its $10 million renovation. The new renovation features new flooring throughout the mall, as well as a new mall logo.

The most well read story of the week was a protest by several Waterford parents This year, class sizes at that level were up to 25 students, and next year the number should be around 24. Superintendent Jerome Belair said the large numbers are “a hot spot,” but there were limited funds in the budget and the Board of Education focused more on keeping class sizes in grades kindergarten-through-third small.

It was Memorial Day this weekend, and in New London a Waterford soldier who died in 2011 in Afganistan. Also with Memorial Day comes Memorial Day arrests, during the long weekend.
