Iraq War Ends, Gadhafi Dies

News from the Middle East dominates today’s headlines.

President Barack Obama today declared the end of the Iraq war and announced plans to bring all U.S. troops home by the end of the year.  The prospect of having their loved ones home for the holidays is welcome news to families with members stationed in Iraq.

Today’s international news is dominated by one story: Libya’s ousted leader Moammar Gadhafi is dead. The longtime dictator was captured and killed by rebel forces, which had succeeded in taking over the government earlier this year. For the most part, Libyans rejoiced at the news.

The business news isn’t good for part-time employees at Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club today. The retail giant, which has a store in Waterford, is planning to cut health benefits. 

Sports news highlights the UConn Women's Basketball team. We take it for granted that the UConn Huskies are always number one but this year’s coaches poll picked Notre Dame to win the Big East. It’s the first time in six seasons that the Huskies haven’t held the top spot.   

There's always lots of drama in high school but there seems to be no end to the controversy stirred up when two male students shared a kiss onstage during a Hartford High School production of the play, “Zanna.” The show will be presented again tonight.
