Honoring Arnold Holm; Waterford Is Crowned - Again

A Look At The Week That Was

There were several themes this week: Arnold Holm, union contracts, promoting business. But one thing that keeps standing out are those Waterford champions.

Monday night, the Waterford 15-year-old Babe Ruth all-star team defeated Simsbury, 7-4, . That came just after Waterford’s 15-16-year-old as well.

the town has already won this year, Waterford has once again cemented itself as perhaps the best baseball town in Connecticut. We’ve asked person after person why this is, and they all said it comes down to two things: the coaching and the expectations.

Along those same lines, there was some news about Waterford’s first great athlete, Arnold Holm. A group of Waterford High School about Holm and the journey to bring his body back home after his death in 1972. For those who don’t know, Holm was killed , and his body wasn’t brought back home and buried in Arlington Cemetery until 2011.

to rename the Civic Triangle Park duck pond Arnold E. Holm Jr. Memorial Park. The town looks like they are willing to change the name, as Holm’s friends are willing to put up the money to make it happen.

In the world of government, First Selectman Dan Steward and the town’s largest union, which involves members of the public works department, recreation and parks department and the secretarial staff, agreed to . The contract gives annual raises of 2 percent, 0 percent, 2 percent and 1.75 percent and increases health insurance co-pays and employees’ cost sharing. The contract still needs to be approved by the Representative Town Meeting on August 6.

The most well read story of the week was about how the Crystal Mall was – , Eblens. The store should be open by August, although the reaction to the news on Waterford Patch’s Facebook page was tepid at best.

On Wednesday, Gov. Dannel Malloy visited Waterford’s Eugene O’Neill Theatre Center, among other places in Southeastern Connecticut, . Also Wednesday, Patch went to one of Waterford’s , and watched some kids rock to the beats.

In other news, the United States Senate is looking girls at a local camp made , new and 12 properties were sold in Waterford in at least 16 months.
