Five Things To Know For Monday, April 18, 2011

1.    Expect a nice day today. It should be sunny with a high in the 50s, according to the National Weather Service.

    2.    There is a peacock roaming the yards of Jordan Village, according to Dave Bednarz, who spotted the blue bird Saturday. Animal Control Officer Robert Yuchniuk was unsuccessful in his attempt to capture it, and it continues to roam. If anybody sees the bird, send a picture to Patch. You might just win a prize…

    3.    Speaking of animal control, the ad-hoc animal control facility committee meets tonight at 5:30 to try to nail down plans for a new animal control facility. Last month, the board of finance a $45,000 allocation for plans for a new building because the committee had no real idea of how much it would cost, or what the plan was. Also, the group continues to look at other towns such as New London for regionalizing the facility, but New London’s euthanasia policy appears to be a big hurdle to overcome.

    4.    Jeff Goldberg was the UConn women's basketball beat writer for The Hartford Courant when the Sue Bird-led Huskies beat Notre Dame at the buzzer for the Big East title. In the parking lot afterward, Goldberg and other writers were talking about how it might have been the best women's basketball game ever played. “Someone should write a book about it,” Goldberg said, and he followed through with the recently published “Bird At The Buzzer.” He talks about the book and all things UConn tonight at 7 at Waterford Library.

    5.    On this date in 1923, Yankee Stadium opens, with Babe Ruth hitting the first home run in the first game. And on this date in 2007, the United States Supreme Court upholds the Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act with a 5-4 decision.
