Happy St. Patrick's Day! And What The BOF Thought Of The Fire Budgets

Five Things To Know For Thursday, March 17, 2011

  1. Today should be sunny, with a high of 53, according to the National Weather Service. It should start getting cloudy tonight, and a chance of rain Friday morning, according to the service.
  2. Happy St. Patrick’s Day! More importantly, happy first real day of the NCAA Tournament. Games begin at 12:15 p.m. on CBS, TruTV, TNT and TBS, with the latest one tipping off at 10 p.m.
  3. Just an update on the town’s fire services and five fire companies, which had their budgets reviewed Wednesday night by the board of finance. The only noteworthy cut was a $3,000 reduction to Quaker Hill Fire Company. Most other budgets were accepted as is, or with very minor cuts. Also, Patch asked interim Cohanzie Fire Company Chief John Mariano on the status of barred Chief Tony Macrino. Mariano said Macrino is still being , and no decision has been made.
  4. Board of finance member J.W. “Bill” Sheehan said Wednesday that the board of finance was originally looking to cut another $300,000 to $500,000 from the board of education’s budget. The board of finance may back off that after Tuesday’s decision about layoffs, but the board wants to continue to lower the tax rate, Sheehan said.
  5. New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer, who built a career on attacking Wall Street, resigns on this date in 2008 after being caught spending tens of thousands of dollars on high-priced prostitutes. When the news becomes public, Wall Street briefly shuts down for wild celebration.
