Five Things To Know Today

What To Know For Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2011

  1. A nice day today. Expect a high of 40 with some slight wind, and a low of 30 tonight, according to the National Weather Service.
  2. It should be a fairly routine day at Waterford High and Clark Lane Middle School. Great Neck Elementary has drama club after school, as does Oswegatchie Elementary. Mrs. Kupis’ fifth-grade class at Quaker Hill Elementary travels to the LEARN Regional Educational Service Center today.
  3. Story time runs at 10 and 10:30 a.m. at the Waterford Public Library. And at the Waterford Community Center, strength class is at 8:30 a.m., then bridge at 9, followed by flexibility and balance class at 9:45 and finally a blood pressure clinic at 11.
  4. The proposed school budget would cut the Talented and Gifted program at Clark Lane Middle School. Tuesday, Patch received emails from several TAG students concerned about the cut. That will be investigated today; expect a story tomorrow. Do you think TAG should be cut?
  5. On this date in 1959, Fidel Castro takes control of Cuba after dictator Fulgencio Batista is thrown out of power. And in 1968, the first 911 emergency telephone system is installed, in Haleyville, Ala.
