Five Things To Know For Tuesday, May 10, 2011

1.    Today is expected to be partly sunny, with a high of 64 and with wind speeds that could reach 30 mph, according to the National Weather Service. There is a slight chance of rain tonight, and that could carry over into Wednesday morning, according to the service.

2.    Congratulations go out to Recreation and Parks employee Robert Cooper, who did a phenomenal job Monday.

Liz Sutman, head coach of the undefeated Waterford softball team, told the recreation and parks department Friday that she wanted Veterans Memorial Field to have some pink for its Monday “Game for a Cure” cancer awareness game against Stonington.

Cooper got the message Monday morning and did a fantastic job. He painted a massive pink ribbon in the outfield, and then used pink chalk to line the field. And to top it all off, the softball team beat Stonington, extending its  winning streak to 53 games.

“He always goes beyond,” Recreation and Parks Program Coordinator Kerry Sullivan said. “He loves his job.”

3.    And speaking of congratulations, hats off to Shane Duplice of Quaker Hill. Duplice, who attends American International College, won the javelin at the 2011 Northeast-10 Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Duplice threw the javelin 56.78 meters.   

4.    Mitchell Cote, a freshman at Waterford High School, is looking for extras between the ages of 6 to 12 for the filming of his screenplay, “The Trouble With Clowns.”

The Southeastern Connecticut Film Society picked up Mitchell’s screenplay and is turning it into a movie. The filming is May 14 and 15 on Bloomingdale Road in Quaker Hill.

    5.    On this date in 1994, Nelson Mandela is inaugurated as South Africa’s first black president. And on this date in 2002, FBI agent Robert Hanssen is sentenced to life in prison for treason for selling information to the Russian government. Hanssen sold the information for $1.4 million in cash and diamonds.
