Everything You Need To Know This Week

For Feb. 20 to 26

  1. The weather should be cold again, according to the National Weather Service. Today should be sunny, with a high of 35, although there is a chance of snow tonight. Monday is the worst day of the week, with snow and freezing rain expected in the morning, although it should stop by the afternoon. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday will all be sunny, with highs of 29, 35 and 39, respectively. Friday and Saturday it is expected to rain, with highs in the low 40s, according to the service.
  2. The week in school news: First, Monday and Tuesday are both vacation days. The entire week was originally off, but Superintendent Jerome Belair, on his first day of the job, from February break. At Waterford High School on Friday, all students interested in taking physics next year must take an early enrollment test after school. Otherwise, the three-day week should be fairly routine, as little was scheduled because originally it was a vacation.
  3. It should be a quiet week in town government, the calm before the storm of board of finance budget hearings. Town Hall is closed Monday for a Presidents’ Day. Tuesday, Gov. Dannel Malloy will be in Waterford to give a speech at the Chamber of Commerce. There is a cover charge, but the event is open to all. The board of fire commissioners meets Wednesday night, the first time the group has met since Tony Macrino as chief of Cohanzie Fire House. Patch will attend and try to find some clarity in the situation.
  4. This week in events: Today is the penguin plunge at Ocean Beach, where brazen philanthropists rush into the icy waters to benefit charity. The Waterford Public Library is closed Presidents’ Day, but picks up with a busy week. Story time is pushed back a day to Wednesday and Thursday. Also Wednesday, the teen writing club meets at 7 p.m. Patch will attend to look for contributors, so anybody interested in getting published can go. And on Saturday, Steve Elci puts on a rock concert (for kids) from 2 to 3 p.m.
  5. The week that was: The biggest story was , which raised a variety of taxes while cutting no state services. Thursday, the board of education, at its regular meeting, was greeted by four concerned students about the TAG program, which the board promised to look at again. On Valentine’s Day, were celebrated. New are being handed out to all Waterford residents and, continuing with the board of education, pay-to-participate sports was, with most board members saying it was a bad idea.
