Everything You Need To Know This Week

Five Things To Know For The Week Of Feb. 13 to 19

  1. The weather for the week is expected to be generally OK, with the exception of Monday, according to the National Weather Service. Today, there is a very slight chance of snow, with a high of 37. On Monday, it is expected to snow, but not hard, and it should be done by noon. Then, the sun will come out and a high of 45, which sounds like Arizona at this point. The rest of the week is filled with carbon copies of each other, with highs between 30 and 40, and gloomy. Not a terrible week, but not great, either.
  2. A full piece will run Monday, but public works will begin to distribute new 96-gallon (the same size as your normal garbage cans) single-stream recycling containers this week. Everybody should get a container by March 1; recycling pick-up will begin in mid-March. The containers will be picked up every other week, on the same day as your regular trash collection. … Also, public works will still pick up Christmas trees, although the service has been delayed because of all the snow, Public Works Director Ron Cusano said. Many of the trees put out on the curb are snow-covered, he said. The trees will be picked up in mid-March, hopefully after the snow has melted, Cusano said.
  3. A fairly routine week in the Waterford school district, with five full days. That has been a rarity, however, as last week was the first week of 2011 that had all five days, with seven snow days interrupting week after week in January. At Waterford High School, there is a meeting right after school in the cafeteria for everybody who wants to play baseball. The Waterford High drama club is holding open auditions for “The Pajama Game” Monday and Tuesday, after school in the auditorium. And at Clark Lane Middle School there will be a meeting for eighth-grade parents at 7 p.m. on the transition into high school. And the lunch menu for the week: Monday, grilled cheese; Tuesday, chicken nuggets; Wednesday, tacos; Thursday, hot dogs; and Friday, ham and cheese grinders.
  4. While the final number is fixed ($42.99 million), the board of education can still move around money to pay for certain things in the budget, such as freshman sports. The board of education meets Thursday and will discuss any changes any board member would like to make, as well as any changes the public would like to make. If anybody has seen the budget (and if not, it’s here) and has a complaint over what the school board has done with the money, it is the best chance to come and voice concerns. Also, it will be the first board of education meeting with new Superintendent Jerome Belair, so the public can meet him and understand his leadership style.
  5. The week that was. Speaking of , on his first day he made a big decision, out of February break to ensure school would end by June 30. The police officers were last Monday, only to have from the police department’s budget (about the cost of the raise) on Tuesday. The at Waterford High was discussed, Quaker Hill Elementary put on a Friday and a town employee I’ll bet every person in town knows, or at least has seen once or twice, celebrated his .

Quote of the Week

“I'd wake up and there'd be nothing. I hardly said a word to my wife, until I said ‘yes’ to a divorce. When I was here, I wanted to be there; when I was there, all I could think of was getting back into the jungle. I'm here a week now ... waiting for a mission ... getting softer. Every minute I stay in this room, I get weaker, and every minute Charlie squats in the bush, he gets stronger. Each time I looked around the walls moved in a little tighter.”
