Daily Five: The Waterford Community Mends a Broken Heart

Five things to know for Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013.

1. Today, there is a chance of light snow, with a high around 33, according to the National Weather Service. Tonight, there is a chance of light snow, with a low around 21, according to the service.

2. Many of you read the story we posted Sunday about how a little girl's doll was (accidentally?) stolen.

Well, a happy update, to some degree. The girl's mom, Rachel O'Brien, posted this on Waterford Patch Monday:

"I want to say how incredibly touched I am. I came home this evening with my daughter and in our front driveway was a beautiful Valentine's bag and inside was a Lala Loopsies doll for Mikayla sent from "someone who cares"! Whoever sent this to her please know how much this means to her and me. First, she has been asking for this doll since the holidays (mom forgot to put it on the list so she never got one). Needless to say she it thrilled beyond words. Second, I have really been down about the whole ordeal. There is nothing worse than looking into the eyes of a beautiful little girl and see nothing but sadness and confusion. Trying to explain the happening to her has been hard. Any way, THANK YOU your kindess as brought tears to my eyes and has made my heart a little lighter. You have reminded me that there are beautiful people out there. You have also taught this very important lesson to a 4 year old better than I could have ever done on my own. The fact that someone took her dollies may stay with her for a while but now it will be followed by...but a beautiful friend bought me a new dollie. Thank you from the bottom of my heart."

3. Tonight is the last chance to register a child or children for Waterford Little League South for the 2013 season. There will be a registration event tonight at the Waterford Community Center from 4:30 to 7:30.

If you have any questions regarding the registration call Sheri Smith at 860-625-5850.

4. A few community events are happening tonight.

First off, the Connecticut Humane Society is hosting an open house to recruit new volunteers at 5 at the Waterford Public Library. If you are interested in volunteering at the shelter, here is your chance. For more information, click here.

There is also a free “new parent course” at the Waterford Babies R Us. To find out how to reserve a spot in the class and for more information, click here.

There is no "suckles away". The money is deposited by those that use it. The rest isRead More relentless retoric...

another 'not for profit' that suckles away at the very core of peoples generosity?? better toRead More 'retire' the banking/WS thieves that casually gore the system with relentless greed, schemes and secrecy.

Mr. Steiner wants to build 72 three story homes on 32 acres in addition to the 60 condos in the twoRead More large buildings. That is more than two individual units per acre or if you include the 60 condos - that is MORE than 4 units per acre! The area around the property for new building is zoned 3 acres per unit. The average of currently built housing abutting the property is about one acre per unit. That is not in keeping with the neighborhood character.

Mr Steiner may be the last hope for this decrepit place. The neighbors need to move along, or buyRead More the place themselves. Change might help the stonewalling attitude that has become evident in nearly the entire town, revolving around exclusive entitled old farts with nothing better to do than remember their glory days of Seaside. Its gone, & it's not going to revert back to a pasture either. (too many complaints about that cow smell and so forth). My advice is to listen carefully and try to work something out, get over your own selfish grandious dreams of Pelham Manor style estates and do SOMETHING before it simply falls apart like Norwich Hospital, the countless thread/manufacturing mills, and every other historic building that has been left to rot.

mary m>> common sense? heee hee. in this day and age? lawyers have made every attempt toRead More eradicate that concept from our every life activity. write it into some law, that can be thence used as future gurantee of use of, by and for their own existence? it's like job security for that entire group, keep the general public at a disadvantage, unable to apply common sense (whats left of it they havent entombed in laws) and uneasy about acting on their own. John Y has the right attitude, heave the cra.pp on the peoples lawn, and hope it doesn't lay there for days as well!

Mary May, I don't know the legality of posting signs on telephone poles. But, take a ride aroundRead More Waterford on Saturday mornings and you'll see signs on anything that is verticle. Take a ride around the same neighborhoods on Wednesday and half the signs will still be there. I wonder if the folks who have had the same yard sale sign at the corner of Great Neck and Rope Ferry Rds. for two and a half weeks wonder why cars are still stopping at their house every Saturday morning.
Mary May May 13, 2013 at 09:53 am
Um I believe it is ILLEGAl to post ANY sign on a telephone pole ANYWAY but free standing signsRead More should be removed after sale is over ! Really a state law just COMMON SENSE we have lost along the way !
