Five Things To Know For Friday, July, 22, 2011

1. Today should be hot and hazy, with a high of 93, according to weather.com. Tonight, it should stay clear, with a low of 71, according to the weather site. 

2. Well there is some good news on the t. Books-A-Million, another bookstore chain, has offered to buy some of the Borders stores, including the “superstore” in Waterford Commons, according to Bloomberg News. This sale has yet to be approved, although Patch will follow this. Either way, out-of-business sales should begin today at Borders stores.

3. , a protest against a new cellphone tower on the grounds of Ocean Beach was held by Waterford and New London residents who live near the park. The group argued the 140-foot tower would be an eyesore and hurt their property values.

In an interview this week, First Selectman Dan Steward agreed with the neighbors. He questioned why the tower had to be 140 feet, instead of 60 feet. Also, if the tower is put there, it should be designed in a way so it is not an eyesore, he said.

4. Patch showed a picture of red brick as part of the new Crystal Mall renovation. That was existing red brick from the renovation, according to Lisa Bell, who works at a public relations firm contracted by the Crystal Mall. That red brick is being prepped for the new tile to be put in. The pictures of what that new tile looks like are show above.

5. On this date in 1933, American Wiley Post becomes the first person to fly solo around the world. And on this date in 1937, the U.S. Senate votes down a move by Franklin Roosevelt to add more justices to the Supreme Court.
