Daily Five: Priest's Prison Decision Pushed Back to Friday

Five things to know for Monday, April 1, 2013.

1. Today there is a chance of showers, with a high around 51, according to the National Weather Service. Tonight there is a chance of showers, with a low around 35, according to the service.

2. Today was supposed to be Fr. Dennis Carey’s judgement day, but it has been pushed back to Friday.

At his last court date in February, Judge Susan B. Handy gave Carey, the former head pastor of Waterford’s St. Paul’s Church who was arrested in June for first-degree possession of child pornography, a plea deal to think about. This week, he will have a choice: take that deal or face a trial. The specifics of that deal were not made public.

Carey was expected to appear in court today to either accept the deal given to him and face sentencing about 10 weeks later or go to trial. At his last court appearance, Handy promised that if he rejected the deal, she would not accept an offer in the future that did not involve more prison time. However, his court date has since been pushed back to Friday.

3. Today is the first day of April break for all Waterford students. The break lasts all week, with students returning to school next Monday.

This break comes with some anticipation for Waterford High School. When school resumes again next Monday, classes will be held in the new addition of Waterford High School.

4. Tonight, the Waterford Representative Town Meeting meets at 7:30 in Town Hall for their regular bi-monthly meeting.

The agenda is relatively short tonight, with the most interesting item a request by the . The meeting is open to the public and there is time for public comment at the beginning of the meeting.
