Daily Five: No “Friending” Between Teachers And Students

Five Things To Know For Monday, Nov. 21, 2011

1. Today, there is a slight chance of rain before noon, with a high around 49, according to the National Weather Service. The rest of the day should be cloudy, with a low around 34 tonight, according to the service.

2. Last week, the Board of Education read through a policy on District employees using social media. Included in the policy is a regulation prohibiting teachers and administrators “friending” students on Facebook. Teachers are allowed to set up groups on Facebook with students, but the group must be accessible by all the students’ parents and the teacher’s supervisor, if the new policy is passed.

It was the first time the board read through the policy. The board can approve the policy, making it official, at the next meeting.

3. There was another successful can drive at Clark Lane Middle School this month. Last year, and again this year thousands of non-perishable goods were raised for charity. The cans were collected from Nov. 3 to Nov. 17, and then all the food was picked up on Nov. 18.

4. Tonight, the The group will discuss using the school electronic message boards and public access channels for fundraising, among other items, according to the meeting’s agenda.
