Five Things To Know For Friday, Nov. 11, 2011

1. Today should be mostly sunny, with a high near 53, according to the National Weather Service. Tonight should be clear, with a  low of 34, according to the service.

2. Today is Veterans Day. All Waterford public schools are closed today, along with all government buildings.

3. Books-A-Million has moved in to Waterford Commons, replacing Borders, which . Books-A-Million is an Alabama-based chain. It is the second largest brick-and-mortar book retailer in the United States, according to the company’s website.

4. Wednesday, Patch talked to Republican David Kenney, . Kenney frequently writes letters to The Day newspaper, generally providing a conservative Republican viewpoint.

“When I first started writing to The Day, I got a lot of negative responses,” Kenney said. “As time has gone on, it appears the attitude on that has shifted, and it has been more and more positive.”

Kenney was not yet ready to discuss his views on Board of Education issues such as corporate sponsorships, saying he wanted to learn more about each topic before commenting on them. He was excited to win the election, and said he probably won because there is an anti-incumbent attitude in America right now.  

“To a certain degree it is a pendulum swing (toward Republicans), but I think there have been a lot of people disappointed in the results we have been getting from all levels of government for the last eight to 10 years,” Kenney said. “There is a strong, ‘if you’re in, then you’re out’ mentality.”

In the early afternoon, many areas in the Midwest were having record high temperatures for that day, and by nighttime, they were having record low temperatures for that day. For example, in Oklahoma City, there was a record high of 83 in the early afternoon, and then a record low of 17 by midnight.
