Daily Five: Lawsuit Update

Five Things To Know For Friday, Aug. 19, 2011

1. Today should have scattered showers before noon, with a high of 78, according to the National Weather Service. Tonight, the rain should resume and storms are predicted as well, according to the service.

2. Patch interviewed Superintendent Jerome Belair Thursday afternoon after it was announced that the state unions accepting a concession deal that would freeze their wages for the next two years make changes to health care and pension benefits. Belair discussed how this agreement would affect the town’s ability to negotiate. Currently, Belair is under the Waterford Board of Education, including the teachers union.

“It's one more piece of trending data to use,” Belair said. “It's another factor in how the settlement might fall.”

3. Speaking of the Waterford Board of Education, a lawyer representing the group is asking to throw out a lawsuit brought by . Toelkan sued the town because she said her daughter, Breanna Homme, fell off of a stationary bike in gym class and sustained life-altering injuries.

Jim Williams, the lawyer representing the board of education, is asking because the case to be dismissed because Toelkan filed the suit after Homme turned 18. Homme was required to file the suit because she is now an adult, Williams said. The court has yet to rule.

  1. Tonight, four new movies open at Regal Cinemas in Waterford: “Conan the Barbarian,” “Fright Night,” “One Day” and “Spy Kids: All the Time in the World.” Also, tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Waterford Country School is opening its doors to the public for its annual fun day at the farm. Events include hayrides, pony rides, horse-drawn wagon rides, exotic and farm animal exhibits, a birds of prey exhibition and much more. 
  2. On this date in 1945, Veit Minh, led  by Ho Chi Minh, takes power in Hanoi, Vietnam. Of course, the United States would later fight this force in the Vietnam War. And on this date in 2010, Operation Iraqi Freedom ends, with the last of the United States brigade combat troops leaving Iraq.
