Five Things To Know For Friday, Sept. 30, 2011

1.     Today should be sunny with a high of 75, according to the National Weather Service. Tonight, scattered showers are possible and it should be generally cloudy, with a low of 57, according to the service.

2.     Bad news for Luca Mastrangelo, . Irene and all its fury knocked down his corn, pretty much ruining the stalks. A week later, Mastrangelo conceded and pulled out the stalks, he said.

But all is not lost. He did get ears before the storm hit and they were “excellent.” And Mastrangelo will be planting his corn against next year.

3.     The new tile is l, according to the mall’s Facebook page. The tile is being installed in the downstairs, near Sears, according to Patch’s own observation.

-Waterford High School plays at Windham tonight in football at 6:30. Waterford is 1-1, trying to rebound after a loss to Montville last week.

-The 12th Annual Eugene O’Neill Celebration, at the Eugene O’Neill Theater, starts tonight at 8, and runs tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Admission is free.

-The “MADD About Dancing” benefit is tonight at 7 p.m., featuring local celebrities, none of course more famous than me, Paul Petrone. I’ve heard the event is sold out, but I’ll post a video of the dance later, so the general public also has a fair chance to laugh at me.

-Three new movies open tonight at Waterford’s Regal Cinemas: "50/50," a lighthearted tale about a guy diagnosed with cancer, plays at 4:30, 7:20 and 9:50; "Dream House," a suspense thriller, plays at 4:20, 7:30 and 10; and "What’s Your Number," a romantic comedy, plays at 4:15, 7:15 and 9:55.

5.     On this date in 1972, Roberto Clemente records his 3,000th and final hit. Clemente would die that winter in a plane crash. He was flying to Nicaragua to help the people there who had just endured an earthquake. Just an interesting tidbit on Clemente: He is the only player to have ever hit a walk-off inside-the-park grand slam.

And speaking of those who died young, on this date in 1955, movie star James Dean dies in a car accident.
