Daily Five: A Donated Upgrade To The Animal Shelter

Five Things To Know For Friday, Sept. 21, 2012

2. Benvenuti Oil has completed upgrades to the heating system to the Waterford-East Lyme Animal shelter at no cost to the town, meaning it should be much warmer this winter for the animals, according to the minutes of the September 10th Animal Control Facility Study Ad Hoc Committee.

Before, the shelter would get so cold, the water bowls would freeze and the dogs would have to wear sweaters, according to Waterford-East Lyme Animal Control Officer Robert Yuchniuk. Patch had an article earlier this month about Benvenuti Oil working with supplies donated from Home Depot to fix the problem, and now that work is done, according to meeting minutes.

The problem was the furnaces were directly across from the thermostat, which was located at the front of the dog kennel room. So the furnace would only heat the front section, and the back kennels would be very cold. Benvenuti Oil ran ducts throughout the shelter so now it heats evenly, and Home Depot donated much of the supplies. All the labor and supplies were donated by the two companies, and the project cost the taxpayers nothing.
