Daily Five: Waterford Country School to get $92k

Five things to know for Friday, Jan. 25, 2013.

1. Today should be windy and cloudy, with a high around 24 but with wind chill values as low as -8, according to the National Weather Service. Tonight, light snow is expected, with a low around 14, according to the service.

2. Thursday evening, State Sen. Andrea Stillman reported the "imminent final approval" of $92,159 in state funding for upgrades to the Waterford Country School.

The school will use the money to replace its roof and a generator. Stillman said she expects the funding to be approved today.

"The Waterford Country School represents a unique collaboration between the state Department of Education and the state Department of Children and Families and depends upon state resources to maintain its facilities and unique programming," said Stillman in a press release. "I'm grateful to Governor Malloy for including these items on this month's bond commission agenda and encourage favorable consideration by other members of the bond commission."

3. Today, Waterford High School students will have an early dismissal, according to the school’s website. Today is the last day of exams at the school, according to the website.

4. Two new movies open tonight at Waterford’s Regal Cinemas. Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters plays at 7, and plays in 3D at 4:05, 7:25 and 9:50. And Parker, which stars Jason Statham and Jennifer Lopez, plays at 4:30, 7:15 and 10.

5. On this date in 2006, Mexican professional wrestler Juana Barraza was arrested for the serial killing of at least 10 elderly women.
