Daily Five: Waterford's New Fad, Scalloping

Five things to know for Friday, Dec. 7, 2012

1. Today there is a slight chance of showers in the afternoon, with a high around 47, according to the National Weather Service. Tonight there is a chance of showers, with a low around 41, according to the service.  

2. Scallop season has begun in the Niantic River, and for some reason, scalloping permits are selling at a record pace, according to Waterford Town Clerk Bob Nye.

Scallop season in the Niantic River runs from November 15th to March 31st and permits are required to harvest scallops. Nye said normally he sells about one or two permits a year, but this year has sold 12 permits already.

People can also buy permits at Hillyers Bait & Tackle and East Lyme Town Hall. Scalloping in the Niantic River is managed by the Waterford-East Lyme Shellfish Commission.

3. The Waterford Education Foundation is searching for teams and, perhaps more importantly, sponsors for the 6th Annual Adult Spelling Bee at Clark Lane Middle School.

The spelling bee takes place on March 26, 2013 at 7 p.m. in Clark Lane Middle School. To sign up for the spelling bee, go to www.waterfordef.org. The bee is a fundraiser for the Waterford Education Foundation, which gives money for different initiatives for Waterford Public Schools.

4. Just one new movie opens today at Waterford’s Regal Cinemas. Playing for Keeps, a romantic comedy starring Gerard Butler, Jessica Biel and Uma Thurman, plays at 4:30, 7:10 and 9:50.
