Daily Five: Five Fire Houses To Four?

Five Things To Know For Tuesday, June 14, 2011

1. Scattered showers are expected throughout the day, with a high of 64, according to the National Weather Service. Tonight, isolated showers are expected until 3 a.m., with a low of 49, according to the service.

2. Monday night, the animal shelter study committee agreed on a new plan to bring to the board of selectmen. The plan is the copy of the plan from Guilford. The 2,700-square-foot building cost that town in 2007, committee chairwomen Margaret Ormond said. The group will bring the plan to the board of selectmen at its next meeting on June 21 for approval.

Also at that meeting, New London brass came to talk to the group about regionalizing the animal control shelter. Although you might have to read tomorrow’s Patch to get that full story…

3. In an interview with First Selectman Dan Steward, the town leader said he would possibly reduce the amount of fire companies in town from five to four. The move would only be done with agreement from all five chiefs, and if it would save the town money and not hurt its insurance rating, Steward said.

Steward speculated on what fire station might go, which could be any but Quaker Hill, he said. Goshen Fire Company is the best-built fire station, while the other three are in better locations but need work, he said.
