Daily Five: Fire Displaces Four

Five Things To Know For Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2011

1. Today should be sunny, with a high near 66, according to the National Weather Service. Tonight should stay clear, with a low of 41, according to the service.

2. Tuesday, a fire at Race Rock Road displaced a family of four, two adults and two children, according to the American Red Cross.

The Red Cross is providing the family with financial assistance for an emergency shelter and necessities. Nobody was hurt in the fire, according to the Red Cross.

3. A clarification, because I had a couple of people e-mail me about this: No teachers were laid off this school year. More than 20 positions were cut, but thanks to resignations and retirements, nobody lost their job. were later brought back.

Monday night the board of education approved for the teachers union that include health insurance concessions and salary increases averaging 1.91 percent per year.

First Selectman Dan Steward said he would use that contract as a blueprint for what he wants from the municipal unions. Currently, for example, most of the co-pays for an office visit for municipal unions are $5, and that has to be addressed, Steward said.

This will allow the town to avoid cuts to services, Steward said. This year, the town is down seven positions from last year, and the town can’t cut seven positions every year without affecting services, Steward said.

“Most of the union members are aware that we are doing this,” Steward said. “We need to control costs.”

4. Today, Waterford High School girl’s junior varsity soccer, junior varsity volleyball and varsity volleyball all have games. Also tonight at 5, the finance committee, a subcommittee of the board of finance, discusses the allowable tax increase for the upcoming year. This is a pretty large decision, as the recommendation will be paramount in how much property taxes will increase next year.

Also this morning at 10 is Mother Goose Story Time at Waterford Public Library for children 0 to 3.
