Daily Five: Work At The Old Airport Property

Five Things To Know For Thursday, Feb. 23, 2012

1. There is a chance of rain today before 9 a.m. and after 2 p.m., with a high around 55, according to the National Weather Service. Tonight, there is a chance of rain, with a low around 38, according to the service.

2. For those of you wondering about the fence that is being installed in the old Airport property at the end Parkway South: no, the property, which has been vacant for years, has not found a use.

Instead, Connecticut Light & Power is leasing the property to install a fence to keep equipment there for its planned line separation, according to Town Planner Mark Wujtewicz. The power company owns the property next to the old airport, which holds several power lines. CL&P is separating those lines to “increase reliability of the transmission system,” according to a company release.

3. Tonight at 7, the Board of Education meets in Town Hall. The board will review its 2010-11 strategic school profile and Superintendent Jerome Belair will give an update on the 2012-13 school budget. Also, the board will look to adopt two new policies, one on searching students and another on accepting corporate donations.  

There is a public comment session on the agenda at the beginning of the meeting for those who wish to speak.

4. Tuesday night, the School Building Committee unanimously approved a $12,731.29 change order to delete two cabinet unit heaters in the vestibule of the west entrance as part of the Waterford High School renovation.

The change will eliminate two cabinet heaters, which are not attractive, are less efficient and can require more maintenance, School Building Committee Chairman Alan Wilensky said.

The west entrance is the entrance people will use to go to concerts and the field house and other events, Wilensky said.

5. On this date in 1896, the Tootsie Roll is invented. And on this date in 2010, criminals pour more than 2.5 million liters of diesel fuel and other toxins into the Lambo River in Italy. The case remains unsolved.
