Daily Five: School Budget, Taxes Due

Five Things To Know For Thursday, Jan. 5, 2011

1. Today should be mostly cloudy, with a high of 41, according to the National Weather Service. Tonight should become increasingly cloudy with a low of 26, according to the service.

2. Tonight is the first of two budget workshops for the Board of Education on the 2012-13 school year budget. , Superintendent Jerome Belair said the district would cut two teaching positions through attrition, but that was because enrollment was down and will not affect class sizes.

Tonight, the actual budget numbers will be released, and reports will be given on the parts that compose the overall spending plan. The meeting, which starts at 7 p.m. in Town Hall, will start with a budget overview by Belair, and then reports on the budgets for districtwide services, staffing, instructional program, technology and then an open discussion. Next Thursday, the board will review the budgets for special education, the three elementary schools, , - athletics, and buildings and grounds. There will be time for public comment at both meetings.

3. The Waterford High School girls basketball team beat Ledyard Monday 46-34 and now has sole possession of first place in the Eastern Connecticut Conference Medium Division, according to The Bulletin. Waterford is a perfect 4-0 within the division, and handed Ledyard its first loss in the division, according to The Bulletin. Senior Adily Martucci, , continues to lead the team.
