Daily Five: Twist In The Dickie Anderson Trial

Five Things To Know For Friday, March 9, 2012

1. Today should be cloudy, with a high near 46, according to the National Weather Service. Tonight should be clear, with a low around 26, according to the service.

2. Defense lawyers are requesting that the start of the Dickie Anderson murder trial be delayed because there is information to suggest somebody else is guilty of  the murder, according to The Bulletin.

Anderson was arrested in 2010 for the murder of Waterford resident Renee Pellegrino and a Norwich woman in the late 1990s. Defense lawyers now say that they have uncovered a 2000 statement from a witness who said another man killed Pellegrino because she was pregnant with his child, according to The Bulletin.

The arguments will be heard today in New London Superior Court. Pellegrino was pregnant when she was murdered in 1998.

3. According to meeting minutes, Margaret Ormond has rescinded her request to rejoin the . Ormond was chairwoman of the committee until she resigned in the fall of 2011. She had asked to rejoin the board, but has since rescinded that request.

4. Three new movies open tonight at Waterford’s . John Carter, which is about “former military captain John Carter who is inexplicably transported to Mars where he becomes reluctantly embroiled in a conflict of epic proportions amongst the inhabitants of the planet,” according to movietickets.com, plays at 6:45 and 9:40, and in 3D at 4:10, 7:05 and 10. A Thousand Words, a comedy starring Eddie Murphy, plays at 4:20, 7:15 and 9:50. And Silent House, a horror, plays at 4:30, 7:15 and 9:25.

5. On this date in 1959, the Barbie doll is first displayed at the American International Toy Fair in New York. And on this date in 2010, the first same-sex marriages in Washington, D.C. take place.
