Five Things To Know For Thursday, Sept. 15, 2011

1. Today, showers are expected and thunderstorms are possible after 3 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. Showers should taper off somewhere between 8 and 10 tonight and the temperature will drop to a low of 48, according to the service.

In yesterday’s daily five, we said the negotiations between the teachers and administration over a new teachers contract lasted through the night.

2. Well, some more specifics from J.W. “Bill” Sheehan’s liaison report Wednesday night at the board of finance meeting. The negotiations meeting started at 6 p.m. Monday and ended at 11 a.m. Tuesday.

And all that time was largely for naught, as mediation proved ineffective. Instead, the administration and the teachers will face arbitration, starting on Sept. 30, he said.

3. Speaking of board of finance liaison reports, Alan Wilensky gave one on construction at the high school. The field house is expected to open later this month, and the pool should open the middle of October, Wilensky said. The football field is still slated to open on Thanksgiving.

4. On Sept. 23, the Waterford Soccer Club is holding a fundraiser calling “The World Cup of Wines and Beers” at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Barn from 7 to 10 p.m. The event will feature wine and beer tasting to raise money to pay off the lights at Spera Field.

5. On this date in 1935, Nazi Germany passes laws that take away citizenship for all German Jews. Also that day, the country adopts a new national flag with a swastika as the logo.

And on this date in 2008, Lehman Brothers files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, the largest bankruptcy filing in United States history.
