Five Things To Know For Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2012

1. Today should be mostly sunny, with a high near 42, according to the National Weather Service. Tonight, there is a chance of rain, sleet and snow, with a low around 31 and heavy winds, according to the service.

2. When asked Tuesday, First Selectman Dan Steward, who is also the chairman of the Southeastern Council of Governments and was speaking in that capacity, said Southeastern Connecticut is committed to have the Coast Guard stay in the area.

The Coast Guard had tried to buy part of Riverside Park in New London to expand its operation, . Since, the Coast Guard has said it needs to expand and was considering moving some operations to another area, according to The Day.

“Our intent is to support (New London) to find a solution for the Coast Guard," said Steward. "Our intent is to keep the Coast Guard in Southeastern Connecticut.”

Steward said the Coast Guard brings prestige to the area, as well as commerce and tourism. He said the best solution is keeping the Coast Guard in New London, but other towns are willing to help if needed.

3. Nominations for the 62nd Citizen of the Year are being accepted until 4 p.m. January 17.

From the Chamber’s website: “This honor is awarded to a special man or woman for outstanding contributions to the civic and business community. No candidate will be considered who is paid to perform the services for which he or she was nominated, unless the contribution encompassed altruism toward the community far beyond the dictates of the job. This annual award will be presented at the annual celebration in April or May 2012.”

4. Just an update about the , as five different people asked me about it Tuesday. Patch filed a request to the Waterford Police Department asking for the police report about the incident so the victim can be identified. The department took the request and has four days to respond.
