Daily Five: Adoption Season; Jordan Cove Road

Five Things To Know For Friday, Nov. 4, 2011

1. Today should be mostly sunny, with a high around 52, according to the National Weather Service. Tonight should be clear, with a low around 31, according to the service.

2. Waterford Youth Service Bureau. The program provides Christmas gifts for families who are in need. Last year, 97 families qualified for help, the most ever, but all 97 were “adopted” by people in the community, Youth Services Director Dani Gorman said.

This year, already 38 families have qualified for gifts, a high number this early, Gorman said. But so far three families have been denied for not fitting the criteria, she said.

“The screening process is tight,” Gorman said.

If anybody is interested in adopting a family, or is in need, contact the Waterford Youth Service Bureau at 860-444-5848. To qualify to be adopted, the family must be from Waterford.

3. The Public Works Department has put together a $134,500 package to fix Jordan Cove Road. Jordan Cove Road was damaged on Aug. 28 as part of Tropical Storm Irene, when part of the road caved in.

Public Works Director Ron Cusano has said the road needs to be fixed before it snows, as that section cannot be plowed. Because it happened during Irene, FEMA will pay for 75 percent of the cost, Cusano said.

The Board of Finance will vote on the appropriation on Nov. 9, at its regular meeting.

4. Two new movies open tonight at Waterford’s Regal Cinemas. Tower Heist, featuring Eddie Murphy and Ben Stiller, plays at 4:25, 7, 7:25 and 9:25. And A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas, obviously playing in 3-D, plays at 4:40, 7:15 and 9:30.

5. On this date in 2008, Barack Obama wins the presidential election, becoming the first black man to be elected president of the United States. Also on this date in 2008, Proposition 8 passes in California, revoking the state’s recognition of same-sex marriage.
