Five Things To Know For Monday, Sept. 19, 2011

1. Today should be sunny with a high of 67, according to the National Weather Service. Tonight should be cloudy with a low around 54, according to the service.

2. If you walk into the community center, you’ll notice senior services' newest feature: a café that features $1 muffins and 75-cent coffee. The café, which is right in the main entrance hall, is run by volunteer senior Gary Pisapia. But more importantly, there are some tables and chairs so people can finally take a moment to breathe, Pisapia said.

“Everybody is running all the time,” he said. “Sometimes, people need to calm down and stop for awhile.”

3. Tonight, the ad-hoc animal shelter committee meets to talk with purchasing agent Kate Rotella to find out exactly what type of animal shelter is desired by it and the town. Once the shelter comes back from bid, a true price will be known for the shelter, and then it can be put into the town’s capital plan, First Selectman Dan Steward said.

Still, Steward has said the shelter will , something finance board member J.W. “Bill” Sheehan said in a Friday interview was the right decision.

4. Okay, three quick hits.

-Today is the first day to sign up for preteen basketball. Signups are from 5:30 to 7 at the community center for boys and girls grades 3 through 7. Signups also run on Wednesday and Friday at the same time and place.

-It is time to sign up for Waterford Youth Hockey, which starts Oct. 9. The cost is $155 for the 11-week program. To sign up, email Dave Collins (oswegatchie99@yahoo.com) or Michael Brandt (Michael.d.brandt@snet.net).

-If you had costs from Tropical Storm Irene, it is not too late to register with FEMA. To register, call 800-621-3362. You need your social security number, a brief description of the damage and your insurance information.
