Daily Five: The Disadvantages Of Buying Local

1. Today should be partly sunny, with a high near 60, according to the National Weather Service. Tonight should be cloudy, with a low around 45, according to the service.

2. At a Board of Finance meeting Wednesday, board member Mark Wiggins asked if the Town of Waterford tries to buy its equipment and supplies from Waterford businesses.

Finance Director Rudie Beers said the town does not have a local preference ordinance, which would basically say that if two bids came in close, the local business would win. New London has one, but Waterford decided not to do it because it often means higher prices for the town, she said.

“The (Representative Town Meeting) felt it would destroy the competitive bidding process,” Beers said. “And wind up costing the town much more money.”

3. It appears, after about a month and a half,  at the Waterford Police Department has been effective.

Police Officer Bob Strohl recently cleared out the repository, and there was enough prescription drugs to fill up three garbage bags (pictured). Strohl will send the drugs off to be destroyed.

The drug repository is a place people can get rid of prescription drugs they no longer need. The repository is in the lobby of the , which is always open.

4. Tonight, the Board of Finance continues its budget reviews. Tonight the board will review the budgets of public health and nursing, youth services, senior services, recreation and parks, , human resources, legal services and debt services.

The meeting is at 7 in Town Hall. Every meeting begins with a public comment session.
