Daily Five: Girl Scout Cookies; Neighborhood Watch

Five Things To Know For Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2011

1. Today should be mostly sunny, with a high around 61, according to the National Weather Service. Tonight should be clear, with a low around 43, according to the service.

2. There will be no school at any Waterford Public School, as the three elementary schools are being used as voting stations. All teachers will have professional development today.

3. The Waterford Police Department is now registering people for its neighborhood watch/neighborhood emergency team training, which begins in January.

The program is free to all Waterford residents 18 and older. Waterford Police Officers will teach the class in an effort to revitalize neighborhood watch teams, and also to teach residents how to report suspicious activity, according to a police press release.

The classes are every Tuesday in January, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Waterford Police Department. Anybody interested in joining should e-mail Sergeant Dana Seymour at dseymour@waterfordct.org or call (860) 442-9451.

4. Today, at Oswegatchie Elementary School, the voting location for the Third District, Junior Girl Scout Troop 63405 Besides just buying cookies for oneself, people can participate in the “Cookies of Heroes” program, where people can buy Girl Scout Cookies for soldiers overseas. The Girl Scouts of Connecticut will mail these cookies overseas to the troops.

5. On this date in 1960, Democrat John F. Kennedy, 43, becomes the youngest man to be elected president, defeating Republican Richard Nixon. And on this date in 1793, the French Revolutionary government opens the Louvre museum to the public.
