Daily Five: BOE Hears Union Grievance Tonight

Five Things To Know For Thursday, March 15, 2012

1. Today should be partly sunny, with a high near 62, according to the National Weather Service. Tonight, it should be cloudy with a chance of rain after midnight, with a low of 40, according to the service.

2. Tonight at 7:30 in Town Hall, the Board of Education will have a special meeting to discuss a grievance by the teachers union and possibly take action on the grievance.

The deliberations on the grievance will be held in executive session, meaning reporters won’t be allowed in. The action on the grievance must be done publicly.

In December, after Superintendent Jerome Belair rejected it in October. The teachers allege that they have been paying too much in health insurance premiums. Belair rejected the grievance in November based off a technicality and because he said the grievance has no merit.

If the Board of Education rejects the grievance, the teachers union could take take the complaint to arbitration.

3. The will be accepting applications until the end of March for the upcoming school year.

The Friendship School is a magnet school for 3-,4- and 5-year-olds in Waterford and New London.

4. Waterford's Pasquale S. Folino has been elected president of the Connecticut Funeral Directors Association, the CFDA announced in a press release.

Folino is an owner of the in New London and Niantic.

“I have been honored to serve the Southeastern part of the state as a funeral director for more than 20 years, and am eager to lead my fellow funeral service professionals statewide at this time,” Folino said in the press release.

“During the next year, we will expand the association’s community outreach and consumer education, and build upon our strong base of support for Connecticut families – both as an organization and as individual funeral directors in our own towns.”
