Daily Five: $500k Requested For Sub Base Fight

2. Monday, State Sen. Andrea Stillman, D-Waterford, sent a letter to Gov. Dannel Malloy requesting $500,000 in state funds to form a sub base coalition, which would fight against the potential closing of the Groton Sub Base.

“Recently, (New York) Governor (Andrew) Cuomo authorized the same amount so that New York can prepare as well,” Stilllman wrote in her letter to Malloy. “The economic impact if our Base is closed is a loss of billions of dollars to our economy and countless numbers of lost jobs.”

State Rep. Betsy Ritter, D-Waterford, also co-signed the letter.

The event pits three-member teams against each other in a spelling contest. All money raised from the event goes to the Waterford Education Foundation, and the event is open to the public to watch.

The event has attracted a wide variety of teams, from legislators (Stillman and Ritter often participate) to business owners to teachers.
