Christmas Trees Finally To Be Picked Up By DPW

Five Things To Know For Friday, March 4, 2011

  1. A blah day today. It will be mostly cloudy, with a high of 38, according to the National Weather Service.
  2. The Waterford Public Works Department will pick up Christmas trees curbside from March 14 - 18. The department normally picks them up the week after Christmas, but that was delayed this year because of the heavy snow.
  3. Need something to do with the kids tonight? The Children’s Museum in Niantic is , from 5 to 8 p.m. Electric Boat sponsors the event.
  4. Saturday is the day to for junior and senior league softball and American Legion baseball, from 10 a.m. to noon in Waterford High School. Also, girls interested in signing up for American Legion softball can sign up from 12 to 1:30 p.m. in Waterford High School’s Field House Lobby.
  5. On this date in 1877, “Swan Lake” premieres in Moscow. On this date in 1997, President Bill Clinton bans all federally funded human cloning research. And in some sad sports news, on this date in 1990, Loyola Marymount University All-America basketball player Hank Gathers dies on the court during a game. Gathers, who shot free throws left-handed, would be honored by teammate Bo Kimble, who shot free throws right-handed, in the next game by shooting the first two free throws left-handed. Kimble sunk them both.
