Belair’s Take On Wilensky’s Comments

Five Things To Know For Saturday, April 30, 2011

1.     A nice day is expected today. Sunny, with a high of 62, according to the National Weather Service.

2.     Friday, Patch talked with Superintendent Jerome Belair about Alan Wilensky, who, speaking as a parent at a board of education meeting, . Belair said he was disappointed with the way Wilensky handled the situation, saying the conversation should have been held in private, not in the open at a board meeting. He also said it was the first time he had heard of the allegations (the alleged incidents happened over a year ago; Belair has been superintendent for three months), but he will investigate them.

“Nothing is black and white, you need to investigate… and then a consequence is rendered,” Belair said. “I would like to remind the public of the appropriate channels of communication.”

First, the parent should discuss the issue with the teacher or the teacher’s supervisor (possibly a principal), then that supervisor’s supervisor (Belair), before bringing it to the final authority, the board of education, Belair said.

3.     Today, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Waterford Police Department, the police and Waterford Youth Services are hosting an event where people can turn in all their unwanted prescription drugs.

4.     Also today at 10 a.m., the Waterford High School Orchestra is hosting a car wash at the school. The car wash is free, although donations are welcome to benefit the Orchestra’s trip to New York in the fall.

5.     On this date in 1803, the United States completes the Louisiana Purchase from France for $15 million, doubling the size of the country. While admittedly inflation has screwed this up, to put it in perspective, the New York Mets will pay a washed-up Carlos Beltran more than all the land between the Mississippi River and the Colorado Rockies (more than 10 states) cost.
